The customer

Sven Sigg AB, Finland’s largest tomato grower, exemplifies the benefits of innovative agricultural technology. Under Patrik Sigg’s leadership, the company manages nearly 9 hectares of greenhouse space, producing around 7 million kilos of tomatoes annually. This impressive output is now backed by a solid partnership with Food Autonomy.

Starting with an order of 1000 dual-channel double Flexi-Grows, the success and efficiency of these installations led to a second order for another 8000 double fixtures. This repeat business demonstrates Sven Sigg AB’s trust in Food Autonomy’s products and services, paving the way for a long-lasting relationship.

Why Sven Sigg AB chose Food Autonomy

The decision to invest in LED grow lights was driven by the need to reduce energy consumption and operational costs. LED lights are highly efficient, using much less power than traditional lighting methods. This resulted in significant long-term savings on energy bills.

Sven Sigg chose a dual channel controllable spectrum to ensure optimal growing conditions for the plants, which eventually result in healthier and more productive crops. Furthermore, an important aspect was to ensure better working environment for greenhouse workers. When they are working among the crops, the lights are switched to a whiter spectrum.

To control the lights, Sven Sigg uses Food Autonomy’s wireless mesh platform, CultiMesh® which is also integrated int their climate computer.

According to Patrik Sigg, after the initial smooth installation phase, Sven Sigg AB expanded their use of Food Autonomy’s lights, with minimal disruption to greenhouse operations. The strong support and communication from Food Autonomy further solidified their decision.

The results

Since installing over 9,000 double fixtures, Sven Sigg AB has seen significant improvements. Optimized lighting conditions have led to better growth and higher yields, helping the company maintain its leading position in Finland. The LED grow lights have achieved about 25% energy savings, whilst increasing light output (PPFD).

Given high energy prices, the payback period for the LED fixtures is expected to be around three years. The installation process was smooth, allowing uninterrupted operations. This partnership demonstrates how innovative technology can drive success in horticulture.

By adopting LED grow lights, Sven Sigg AB has not only boosted productivity and efficiency but also set a benchmark for sustainable and cost-effective farming practices. As the season changes and the LED lights are switched on, the future looks bright for both Sven Sigg AB and Food Autonomy.
